Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a multi-port adapter that could be used in future Ford electrified vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on December 8th, 2021, published on June 8th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0173931.
The Ford Authority Take
With electrification a big part of its future plans, Ford has filed a host of EV-related patents in recent months, including one for passthrough charging support for EVs, a roof-mounted backup battery, deployable charging points, and a wireless charging system, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent outlines an idea for a multi-port adapter that could be used in future Ford electrified vehicles, too.
This patent actually presents an idea for a charging adapter, but the vehicle depicted in the drawings has two different charging ports, which is something new. However, the adapter itself seems tailored to this particular type of EV or PHEV – not anything like current electrified Ford vehicles offer. It would also effectively combine multiple charging interfaces within one cable or connector, allowing owners to utilize both simultaneously, helping to reduce charging times in the process, if more than one type of charger is available.
What’s particularly notable about this patent is the fact that Ford recently signed a deal with Tesla will grant current and future Ford EV owners access to the latter’s Supercharger network. The automaker also revealed that all existing owners of Ford EVs will receive NACS (North American Charging Standard) adapters, noting that future models may also be capable of utilizing more than one type of connector, giving owners more flexibility when searching for a charging station – something this patent may very well provide us with a preview of.
