Future Ford Vehicles Could Get Self-Learning Cargo System

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a self-learning cargo system that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 6^th, 2021, published on June 8^th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0177888.

Over the past several months, Ford has filed patents for a cargo area tool carrier system, cargo modules that could be used on future pickup models, a new type of cargo management system, and an external display for payloads as it continues to explore ways to make it easier and more convenient to haul things in the future. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a self-learning cargo system that could be used in future Ford vehicles.

As this patent points out, many people have difficulty loading and unloading cargo from vehicles, whether that be due to age or physical limitations, while others simply have the need to load and unload cargo more frequently than others – such as families with children that play sports, those that engage in any number of hobbies, or run a business that requires such things.

With that in mind, the system outlined in this patent would be able to generate data using sensors or cameras, then use that data to predict vehicle cargo use and provide suggestions on the best way to haul or store that type of cargo. This system would even be able to function across multiple vehicles, using GPS data to figure out how vehicles are shared and used for these purposes within families.

Taking all of these factors into account – along with possible mobility concerns and the predicted use of a vehicle – the system could potentially make the act of loading and unloading cargo a bit easier and more intuitive, particularly for those that move things around on a regular basis.
