Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a wireless charging system that may be used in conjunction with future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on November 30th, 2021, published on June 1st, 2023, and assigned serial number 0166608.
The Ford Authority Take
Aside from filing a patent for an EV charging pad with wireless charging back in January, we’ve already seen a company called WiTricity outfit a Ford Mustang Mach-E with wireless charging technology, while a a wireless charging pilot program is also set to launch near Michigan Central Station in the near future. Now, this newly filed patent introduces yet another idea for a wireless charging system that could be used in future Ford EVs.
The concept here, as one might imagine, is pretty simple – wireless charging is a more convenient method to “refuel” an all-electric vehicle versus having to plug it in. However, wireless charging systems transfer power using electromagnetic fields, which can affect the operation of other devices, and can also be impacted by various types of objects – especially those containing metal.
As such, the system outlined in this patent would utilize sensors designed to detect objects that may cause interference or be interfered with by wireless charging systems, within a preselected distance. Otherwise, the system featured in this patent would use cameras, a speaker, and LED lighting to function, as well as indicate when a vehicle is perfectly positioned so that charging can commence.
At this point, it seems as if wireless EV charging is the future, and it’s also clear that Ford intends to embrace that type of technology as well, given its actions over the past several months. As such, we fully expect the idea outlined in this patent – or something similar – will eventually come to fruition.
