2024 Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheeling Brings Back Old Favorite

Back in the 1970s, the Ford Bronco was available with the Free Wheelin package, which was essentially an appearance upgrade that added bright stripes to the exterior of the big-bodied SUV. Free Wheelin Broncos have since become coveted collector’s items – along with the Bronco in general – and many have called for the return of that particular offering on the more modern, sixth-generation version as well. That hasn’t yet happened, but The Blue Oval did create a special, one-off Ford Bronco Sport version that debuted at the 2021 SEMA Show. Now, that package is coming to life for the new model year in the form of the just-revealed 2024 Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheelin.

As one might expect, the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheelin is a special edition model that pays homage to the trucks, vans, and Broncos that bore the same treatment decades ago. That means it features the same type of reflective red, orange, and yellow gradient graphics on the hood, sides, and liftgate, along with painted Shadow Black steel wheels with red accents, a Shadow Black roof, a silver-painted grille with two-tone Bronco badging, as well as a modified lower front end insert.

Inside the cabin, Ford has given the Bronco Sport Free Wheelin the Black Onyx and Dark Space Gray treatment with sunset-colored seat inserts, red and orange pinstriping on the dash and seats, and Race Red C-channel trim for the door panels as a way to bring that retro theme inside.

“Bronco customers appreciate its heritage,” said Jason Hyde, Bronco Sport Marketing Manager. “After such a great response to the reimagined Bronco Sport Free Wheeling project vehicle in 2021, we decided to bring this special edition that ties Bronco Sport to its fun loving roots.” “The Ford Free Wheeling package was developed to appeal to younger customers,” added Ted Ryan, Archives and Heritage Brand Manager for Ford. “The Free Wheeling Broncos were as popular as they were distinctive.”

In addition to the aforementioned goodies, the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheelin includes all of the standard equipment present in the Big Bend trim level. Order banks for this special edition open up today, along with the rest of the 2024 Bronco Sport lineup, which gets two new exterior colors for the new model year – Azure Gray and Desert Sand – though neither is available with the Free Wheelin package.

  1. This looks great except for the wheels. I think they should have opted for some white steelies instead!

  2. Why not just bring back padded vinyl roofs (full, landau and coach) again while at it. Maybe a Lincoln will look better with the padded vinyl roofs and won’t be called a rebadged Ford.

  3. There have been people that have already been doing these “Free Wheelin’” vinyl stripes on their Bronco Sports and full size Broncos as a custom mod for a couple of years now. I imagine this new package kind of ruins their fun; kills the uniqueness of it all. The Heritage models were fun, but this “Free Wheelin’” look sort of revisits a 1970s style that I am not sure people want to revisit. Love the Bronco Sport, but this doesn’t really do it any favors. It feels like Ford is trying to make the Bronco Sport their equivalent of the VW New Beetle with all the retro throwbacks.

  4. Whom ever decided to release the freewheeling package should be fired today!
It seems like the team that is dreaming up the colors and such almost gets things right and then falls back asleep

  5. What an U G L Y Package!!! We all know who’s gonna Buy this UGLY Thing. I’d rather have a 1970 PINTO BEACH WAGON with the PORTHOLE on the Sides. Never seen a 1960’s / 70’s Bronco with these UGLY looking Color Combinations. And they SOLD every One they built, and now their worth Thousands and Thousands, which these Plastic Junkies will Never be worth.
