Ford E-Transit Is Europe’s Best Selling EV Van Through May

The Ford E-Transit has proved to be more popular than the company thought, and the automaker is currently scrambling to increase production of the full-size electric van. As Ford Authority previously reported, it was the best-selling electric van in the United States for 2022. That popularity extends overseas as well,  it was the best-selling EV van in Europe from January through May 2023, according to a report from Automotive News.

The Ford E-Transit moved 4,849 units in the first five months of the year, snapping up 9.7 percent of all electric van sales in Europe out of a total 49,512 units sold in the segment. The next-best seller in the same time period was the VW ID Buzz, which sold 4,331 units, and the Opel/Vauhxall Vivaro-e brought up third with 4,059 sales.

Overall, EV van sales soared 74 percent from January through May. This can be attributed to an increase in demand for zero-emissions vehicles for home delivery services, such as DHL, La Poste and Royal Mail, as well as other service industries, like British Gas.

France proved to be the largest market for EV van sales, with 10,568 total units sold in the country. It was followed by the UK, where 8,355 units found their new homes, and Germany was third, with 6,691 sales.

However, despite the increase in EV van sales, the segment still only accounted for seven percent of total vehicle registrations in Europe. Comparatively, electric cars accounted for 14 percent registration share.

Ford’s position as the leading seller of fully electric vans in Europe will likely continue to increase, considering that the E-Transit Custom is on the way. This model will fill out FoMoCo’s midsize electric van portfolio, catering to customers in search of a powerful, capable van with a manageable wheelbase. In fact, this model is capable of towing up to 2,425 pounds, with an available 100 kW or 160 kW (133 or 214 horsepower) driveline, though each is rated at 415 Nm (306 pound-feet) of torque.
