Ford F-150 Lighting Rival Tesla Cybertruck Begins Production

It’s been a long, winding road for the Tesla Cybertruck and the million-plus people who reserved one years ago following the EV pickup’s debut way back in 2019. Since then, we’ve been treated to numerous updates and hints at design changes, as well as the construction of the automaker’s new Gigafactory Texas production plant. The Tesla Cybertruck was originally slated to launch by the end of 2021 but has instead faced multiple delays, though now, the Ford F-150 Lightning competitor has finally entered production, it seems.

Tesla itself confirmed this bit of news via Twitter, though it’s worth noting that the very first Cybertruck to roll off the assembly line isn’t a customer vehicle – but rather, a pre-production example, as is usually the case. Customer vehicles are currently slated to begin being built in Q3 of this year, though given how many times we’ve heard that before, it wouldn’t be surprising if this date is ultimately pushed back yet again.

In the meantime, the Tesla Cybertruck – which Ford CEO Jim Farley recently said is a vehicle built “for Silicon Valley people,” has watched much of its competition launch and go on sale over the past few years. That includes F-150 Lightning production, which kicked off in April 2022. After that, the Lightning faced tremendous demand prior to multiple price increases due to raw materials costs and other economic factors that ultimately caused that to taper off, though a recent boost in production and falling costs prompted FoMoCo to slash prices significantly.

It’s currently unclear what the Tesla Cybertruck will retail for when it launches, as the automaker removed pricing from its website some time ago. However, it seems unlikely that the EV pickup will start out at $39,900, as was originally slated to be its base MSRP.

  1. The integrated ramp in the tailgate was and is a great idea.

    1. Sure…until it bends and won’t retract.

      1. I’m sure that will never happen. Even the widows are bulletproof and when Elon was onstage he hit them and …oh…wait.

  2. We have only seen pre production versions and do not know all the specifications.

  3. The Cybertruck is, in a word, gross. I cannot imagine it selling in any numbers.
It’s the ugliest thing I’ve seen from any car company.

    1. It’s not as ugly as an Edsel!

      1. My neighbor had a blue 1962 Ford Edsel (named after Henry’s son) and it was not ugly at all. The Cybertruck is worse!

        1. And yet more Cybertrucks will be sold. lol

        2. That’s a neat trick given that the last Edsel model year was 1960.

          1. Exactly. It’s pretty pathetic to have to go back 60 years to compare a CAR to a TRUCK.

      1. 1.8M are waiting for this ugly truck? What are you SMOKING???

You’re just making up numbers. There is NO evidence this thing is highly desired. NONE.

  4. Nice. The Lightning owns the market, the Silverado EV’s production is ramping up at the same time, plus GMC and RAM are right around the corner.

Someone should have told Elon to just write this one off and give everyone’s money back.

      1. I agree with you. My friends dad had an Edsel as his family car in the early sixties. Was dark gray and rather elegant. As far as the cyber monstrosity …. What could you actually do with this thing? I don’t think the big three are going to lose much to this.

      2. Its all over the internet.

      3. I agree with you. The rap on the Edsel continues to be completely undeserved. I’d buy an Edsel today before any other classic car — that’s how much I like them.

Regardless, it’s just ridiculous to compare the Edsel from over 60 years ago to this Cybertruck monstrosity.

  6. The Cybertruck will only sell to Tesla fanboys. Real truck drivers will buy a Ford, Chevy, or Ram. And the F-150 Lightning is the best electric truck with over a year of sales and counting. Elon, you may have won tbe first electric car war but you lost by millions the electric truck war!

    1. I don’t think you boys been keeping up with Elon musk. He doesn’t fail at much.🤔
      Look up his accomplishments.
I’ve been a Ford fan all my life.

      1. Part of me wonders if Elon touted the cybertruck to scare the Big 3 and divert their EV investment dollars away from competing his bread-and-butter sedans. Musk has pushed his engineers and production to do some insane things quickly, so a multi-year delay on the Cybertruck smells fishy.

    2. Its no secret the big 3 own the market, Musk never said or implied the Cybertruck would sell better. In fact he stated the CT is for a purposes other than what truck people want to see in a truck like the Rivian.

    3. Truck buyers will buy regular trucks, not EV trucks, because the EV trucks suck as tow vehicles.

  7. This truck is lame!! Look at the roof design… How is anyone going to sit in the rear seats?? How are you supposed to see out the back window??? EMO’s will buy it for sure!! lol!!

    2. None of the present electric trucks are work trucks, they are toys for the well-off. Price alone prevents use as a work truck. Range with a load is another issue. The present electric truck is the equivalent of the original electronic wristwatch: $2000 and you had to press the button to tell what time it was. It was to be charitable, for early adopters.

At least the cyber truck looks like the toy that it is.

  10. All the Tesla crazies will buy them. Not one will be used as work truck and they will just gush how wonderful it is and it will last forever blah, blah blah, blah. In reality it is just a play toy. Not a work truck.

  13. The whole concept of a ‘Delorian with a truck bed’ has grown on me. Plus, the Cyber Truck really wasn’t ‘rushed’ to market IMO like the Lightning, and other Ford EVs (like the ‘stop gap’ E-Transit), so, I would probably have more confidence in a Cyber Truck, than a Lightning in durability, BUT, I’m sure issues will arise, they always do when a vehicle goes from being in the ‘lab’ to in the ‘real world’. All that being said, both trucks are out of my reach fiscally at this time.
