In Europe – where vans play a vital role in the region’s economy – the Ford Transit has long been a popularity entity, and even closed out 2022 as its best-selling such vehicle. With the first part of the year in our proverbial rear-view mirror, the all-electric E-Transit topped Europe’s EV van sales charts through May, as Ford Authority reported last week, and its ICE counterpart – the Ford Transit lineup – also retained its top spot as well, according to Automotive News Europe.
Together, the Ford Transit and Transit Connect accounted for 77,264 sales in Europe through the first five months of the year, which is a bit higher than the Mercedes Sprinter at 43,936 sales. Each of the two models also outpaced the rest of the light commercial vehicle segment, including the Renault Master (34,030 units), Volkswagen Transporter (33,155), Renault Trafic (28,728), Peugeot Partner (28,302), Iveco Daily (28,228), Citroen Berlingo (25,646), and Ford Ranger (24,669).
In terms of overall light commercial vehicle sales, Ford also beat out its competition by a healthy margin, selling a grand total of 131,832 vehicles versus Renault with 110,363 units, as well as Volkswagen (79,315), Mercedes-Benz, (73,765), Peugeot (64,341), Citroen (60,749), Fiat (55,701), Opel/Vauxhall (40,062), Toyota (37,811), and Iveco (28,276).
Meanwhile, the van market in Europe continues to grow, this time posting a 9.5 percent year-over-year increase to reach 747,962 units, with France (146,299), the UK (136,104), and Germany (102,156) enjoying the most sales in that region. EV van registrations also continued to grow – this time by 74 percent – but with total sales of 49,512 units, still represent just around seven percent of the overall European van market.
