Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for cargo area seating that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 11th, 2022, published on July 13th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0219462.
The Ford Authority Take
The concept of incorporating some type of a rear seating area in vehicles is nothing new, as several manufacturers have offered a variation on that idea for years now. Now, Ford is also considering jumping on that proverbial bandwagon, it seems, as just a few months after filing a patent for a transformable rear seat, it has also filed another patent outlining an idea for cargo area seating that could be used in future Ford vehicles.
This concept is a bit different than rear cargo seating areas we’ve seen in the past, as it utilizes a seat structure that’s attached to a hanger bracket assembly. When the user wants to use the rear portion of their vehicle as a seat, they can simply open the tailgate and pull the seat structure down, which attaches to the cargo floor, instantly creating a comfy-looking place to sit.
This is a relatively simple idea that’s different from the typical hinged floor sections we’re used to seeing, and it makes quite a bit of sense, particularly for crossovers and SUVs. There are times when one may want to utilize the rear cargo area of those vehicles as a seating area – such as sporting events or camping – and adding a simple yet comfortable and effective way to do so would certainly make future Ford vehicles more attractive to people who engage in those types of activities.

Or you could just take a couple of folding camper chairs. Just another useless patent to add complexity
Saw the headline and thought of the hiding seats of the ’60s and ’70s wagons. How about a magic tailgate for SUV’s?
