Vintage Ford Escort models have been a popular entity at various automotive auctions in recent years, with many of them popping up for sale. That list includes Russell Brookes’ 1979 rally racer, a 1988 Escort XR3i, a 1992 Escort Cosworth RS Miki Biason Edition, and a pair of cars owned by Princess Diana – a 1981 model and a 1985 Escort RS, the latter of which sold for a record £722,500 ($848,319 USD). Now, this imported 1978 Ford Escort RS2000 has surfaced for sale at Bring a Trailer, giving someone else the chance to bring home one of these cool classics.
This particular 1978 Ford Escort RS2000 is a left-hand drive model that was sold new in Belgium before making its way to the UK, but it was imported into the U.S. by the seller earlier this year. Finished in Signal Orange, the clean coupe is adorned with black pinstriping and a rear spoiler, and there are few flaws to note aside from scuffs and faded paint in certain spots, though it does seem as if the hood and front fenders were repainted at some point.
Rolling on a set of 13-inch silver wheels wrapped with 175/70 Hankook Kinergy ST tires, this 1978 Ford Escort RS2000 is powered by the Ford 2.0L SOHC I-4 engine, which was factory rated to produce 109 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque. That power flows to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission, while front disc and rear drum brakes handle stopping duties.
Peek inside the cabin, and one will find a pretty clean interior with a mixture of black cloth and vinyl, along with amenities including an analog clock, manual windows, carpeted floor mats, Kenwood speakers, and a Sharp AM/FM/cassette stereo. For a car of this age with 93k miles on the clock, this Escort remains in solid condition, and as something that we rarely see in the U.S., it figures to conjure up its fair share of interest from prospective buyers, too.
