Ford Fiesta Was UK’s Most Popular Used Car In Q2 2023

The Ford Fiesta was recently discontinued as production of the long-running model ended at the Cologne Assembly plant in Germany – now known as the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center – in early July. It was somewhat of a somber occasion for all involved, with the final three models produced rolling off the assembly line bearing the signatures of the workers that built them. However, even though Europeans can no longer buy a new Ford Fiesta, that model remains a red-hot entity on the used vehicle market. In fact, the Fiesta was the UK’s most popular used vehicle in 2022, and it repeated that feat again in Q2 of 2023, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Used vehicle shoppers in the UK snatched up a total of 75,378 Ford Fiesta models in the second quarter of this year – significantly more than the second-place finisher, the Vauxhall Corsa, which recorded sales of 59,113 units. Regardless, small cars in general dominated this list, accounting for 31.5 percent of all used vehicle transactions in Q2 while increasing by 4.4 percent year-over-year to total 576,980 units.

As a whole, the used vehicle market in the UK grew by 4.1 percent in Q2, with 1,832,267 units changing hands, while all-electric models soared by 81.8 percent to 30,645 units, representing 1.7 percent of the total market – a new record. Rounding out these figures, used plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles enjoyed year-over-year growth of 11.4 percent to 18,437 units and 29.5 percent to 53,634 units, respectively.

While the Ford Fiesta figures to remain a hot entity on the used vehicle market for years to come, The Blue Oval hasn’t ruled out bringing back that same nameplate for a future EV, as Ford Authority reported last month. The Fiesta EV would presumably utilize the same Volkswagen MEB platform as the Ford Explorer EV – which is also being produced at the Cologne plant in Germany.
