The Ford Authority Take
In a highly competitive segment, Ford has filed a host of truck-related patents in recent months with an eye toward staying ahead of its rivals. Most of those filings pertain to improving the cargo-carrying capacity of Blue Oval pickups, and include an idea for a sliding crossbar for cargo beds, a self-learning cargo system, cargo modules, an extendable rail assembly, a new type of cargo management system, and a cargo retention frame. Now, this latest filing keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a cargo bed module receiving system that could be used in future Ford pickups.
The concept here is rather simple – an accessory module would be created that fits perfectly in the bed of a pickup, and it could be used to carry just about anything in a more secure manner, particularly for trucks that don’t have tonneau covers installed. The modules would be securely attached inside the bed, but could be easily removed if so desired – even switching out entire modules in the event that one wants to leave its contents somewhere and haul a different load to another location.
Even more interestingly, the patent shows off a variety of ways that cargo could be loaded, unloaded, and stored within the modular. It could feature a slide-out drawer for easy access, or even a crane of sorts that’s capable of pickup up heavy loads. It’s an interesting idea for sure, and one that may eventually be offered as an accessory for future Ford trucks.
