Though the model has been absent from FoMoCo’s lineup for some time now, the Ford Thunderbird remains as popular as ever, with classic examples – including a 1957 E-Code and another ’57 once owned by actress and singer Annette Funicello – highlighting some recent auction offerings. It’s hard to beat a first-gen T-Bird for those that appreciate timeless, beautiful classics, but this heavily-modified 1957 Ford Thunderbird up for grabs at Bring a Trailer offers prospective buyers something a little different than the average stock drop top.
There aren’t many parts of this 1957 Ford Thunderbird that haven’t been touched or modified in some way, shape, or form, starting on the outside, where one will find a smoothed out body complete with frenched headlights, custom fabricated bumpers -with integrated fog lights up front – shaved door handles, an egg crate-style grille, a hood scoop, and slanted tail fins, along with a set of chrome 18-inch aftermarket wheels, while adjustable air springs help raise and lower the whole thing as desired. This work was reportedly completed prior to the seller acquiring the car in 2011, but it has held up quite nicely, regardless.
Inside the cabin, this custom T-Bird features loads of tan upholstery along with custom bucket seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, Vintage Air climate control, power windows, cruise control, a Kenwood touchscreen, and AutoMeter Phantom gauges. This restomodded ride is powered by the naturally-aspirated Ford 4.6L V8, which is seemingly mostly stock and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission for easy, reliable cruising.
With its tasteful upgrades, this modified 1957 Ford Thunderbird certainly stands out in a sea of stock examples, and isn’t exactly something we see every day. As such, it’s no surprise that bidding on the stylish drop top has been quite fierce since this auction started, and the custom T-Bird figures to rake in solid money once the hammer falls in a few days.
