While it came down to contact between the leaders for the race win during the Xfinity Series at Watkins Glen on August 19th, 2023, the NASCAR Ford teams weren’t in the mix up front, having a day full of mixed results at the road course.
Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Ford Mustang, perhaps got the worst of it. He finished 35th after being forced to retire due to an issue with the suspension of his race car on Lap 37. He was understandably frustrated as he stares down the overall championship this year, and this weekend’s result puts him further behind than he wanted to be.
“I don’t think we should be in this situation as it is, it’s just frustrating,” Herbst said. “We have some good tracks for us and good tracks for Stewart-Haas Racing, I’m excited. It’s just frustrating that things like this beyond our control keep happening, but it’ll turn around one day and when it does we’ll be happy.”
Cole Custer managed to put the No. 00 NASCAR Ford inside the top 10 despite being involved in a few incidents. With 19 laps left, Custer spun out, but was able to gather it back up and keep going. Then, he was involved in contact with the No. 7 Chevy Camaro of Justin Allgaier, which triggered a larger wreck and necessitated a caution period. However, he was able to finish sixth, all said and done. In fact, he was part of the only Ford team to finish inside the top 10.
Sam Mayer’s No. 1 Camaro won after a dramatic late-race bump and run.

Another humiliating defeat for Furd, another glorious victory for Chevy!
Ya, how’s that Camaro doing in real life? Oh that’s right, once again being discontinued due to poor sales.
So what is Chevy going to race next year? No Camaro, no racing… except NASCAR bends the rules once again for gm.
Never trust a man in a bowtie
Camaro is gone after 2024 so it is a question of what do they do in 2025. And how do they bend the rules for GM lol
The last units are set to roll off Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan in January 2024. The car will cease production before the first race of 2024
Bending the rules as in allowing gm to race a car that will no longer be in production.
Where does it say they can’t race a car that’s no longer in production? What advantage would that give them? If they wanna race a dead car, let em. Hell. Let’s bring back the fusion too and watch the fan base have a meltdown
Pandoras box was opened by gm when NASCAR bent the rules 1989 – ( one could say in ’63 with the mystery motor production numbers not meeting minimum amount for eligibility ) with the Lumina ( W platform ) a FWD 4CYL/V6 which became RWD and V8 NASCAR competitor ( how in the world??? )…more than a year before the FWD vehicle was available to the public.
NASCAR favouring gm once again with the soon to be extinct Camaro
How is it favoring GM by racing the Camaro through 2024? I’m genuinely curious and nobody can answer me straight lol
How can a company run a car NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION?
That is being favorable to gm by doing such.
but what do they GAIN from running an out of production car? It’s no longer in development, the automaker would really have no incentive to continue to innovate with it. like I said I’m genuinely curious as to what makes everyone think this is an advantage or shows favoritism for GM like, at all.
I never said anything about ” gain ” or ” advantage ” . Please don’t put words in my mouth.
But allowing a company to run soon to be non existent, out of production vehicle is playing favourites.
” Chevy will be able to race the Camaro for the foreseeable future. NASCAR has said gm can run it beyond 2025 ”
“That’s called throwing the dog a bone”
Well, they’re not running a “discontinued” car until after the 2024 model year so you will be correct if they run the Camaro in 2025. See, that wasn’t so hard 🙂
“But allowing a company to run soon to be non existent, out of production vehicle is playing favourites.”
BUT. HOW. You still haven’t answered my question lol
NASCAR has never let an out of production vehicle participate in any of its National Series…until gm whined and complained regarding the Camaro cancellation.
That’s called throwing the dog a bone
FYI chevy is running the 2024 Camaro this year – that’s the MY available in the showroom and ends production in January 2024.
” Per a GM Authority exclusive, production of the 2024 Chevy Camaro will kick off on August 7th, 2023. Production will once again take place at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan. “
“FYI chevy is running the 2024 Camaro this year – that’s the MY available in the showroom and ends production in January 2024”
I know, but the model year still technically exists THRU 2024. Therefore upon conclusion of the 2024 nascar season, the camaro will bow out of nascar. There will be no 2025 Camaro for the 2025 season. 🙂
gm could race a turtle and still beat the Mustang. Furds dream is for gm to retire from NASCAR so they can win a race, oh wait, they’re still is Toyota.
