Ford Patent Extendable Bed Floor And Side Walls

The Ford Authority Take

In recent weeks, Ford has filed an array of pickup bed-related patents, including many that aim to reinvent the way we load, unload, and store cargo in those types of vehicles. This list includes ideas for things like pickup beds with a built-in lift assembly, an extendable cargo bed side wall, a cargo bed module receiving system, an extendable rail assembly, integrated tailgate step attachments, a load assist roller, and crossbars with lift assists, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for an extendable bed floor and side walls that could be used in future Ford pickups, too.

This newly filed patent actually borrows ideas from some of the aforementioned filings – chiefly, the extendable cargo bed side wall – and integrates it with an extending floor to create a bed that can, well, extend out further, expanding cargo capacity when needed. The floor portion of this system would offer up two positions – standard and extended – and users would be able to extend it out when needed, then retract it back to the standard position when it isn’t.

As for the bed sides, those would also be capable of extending out when called upon, matching the length of the bed floor and essentially making the pickup bed longer. The difference here is, users could extend the bed only when they need the extra space, then return it to the standard position when they don’t – offering perhaps the perfect compromise for those that like a long bed pickup, but find a short bed example easier to park or store in a garage.
