The Ford Authority Take
Over the past few months, Ford has filed patents for ideas including a detachable lighting assembly for vehicles, a lighting-based notification system, dimmable external vehicle lighting, a pillar light assembly, and an automatic drive model lighting system. Now, this newly-filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a roof-mounted light assembly that could be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
Of course, roof-mounted lighting is nothing new, as the aftermarket has long offered light bars, pods, and various other elements that one can easily add to their vehicles. These types of parts are typically reserved for off-road situations, when one might need some extra juice to illuminate the dark trails ahead early in the morning or late at night. However, this patent outlines a different type of roof lighting that would be neatly integrated and perhaps even not terribly noticeable when it’s not in use.
Aside from being integrated into the roof assembly, this lighting would also wrap around both the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle, which is rather unique. While it’s unlikely one could utilize this lighting while driving due to federal regulations, it could prove incredibly useful in a variety of other situations, whether that be traversing a dark area, or perhaps even just pulling into a parking lot or garage at night – not to mention off-roading – which makes it potentially viable for use in future Ford vehicles.
