Texas Motor Speedway was a race full of wrecks and tire blowouts, and the NASCAR Ford teams that held on to the end just didn’t have the speed to win on Sunday, September 24th, 2023.
The best Blue Oval racer was the No. 4 Ford Mustang of Kevin Harvick, who nosed his way into sixth place at the line after a relatively quiet run. However, Harvick is not eligible for the Playoffs, as he was eliminated after last weekend’s race at Bristol. Meanwhile Brad Keselowski’s No. 6 NASCAR Ford tailed him in seventh. Keselowski is still competing in the Playoffs, and his top 10 finish is an encouraging result as the season winds down. As it stands right now, he’s eight points above the cutoff line, and historically does well at Talladega, where the Cup Series will race next weekend.
Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 14 Mustang, finished 10th, meanwhile, after a successful run. He’s not eligible for the Playoffs, however.
Ryan Blaney, driver of the No. 12 Mustang, appeared to have a decent day in the bag, racing the leaders for most of the afternoon, until he was nailed with a speeding penalty with 59 laps left. To add insult to injury, before Blaney could recover from the penalty, he was swept into a multicar wreck after two other competitors made contact. The No. 12 Mustang was damaged beyond repair, and he was forced to retire, ultimately finishing 28th, 11 laps down. He’s now below the Playoffs cutoff line an in danger of being eliminated from the postseason championship, with two races left before the Round of 12 concludes.
William Byron’s No. 24 Chevy Camaro ZL1 secured a berth in the Round of 8 with his surprise win at Texas.
