The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, more than one Ford patent has been filed that aims to reinvent the way we access/operate motor vehicles, including ideas for a session unique access token for vehicles, a window based keyless entry system, biometrics in place of traditional keys, advanced key fobs, a folding backup key, and a remote keyless entry system using NFC key cards. Now, this newly filed Ford patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a vehicle access card with a display built into it.

The concept of vehicle access cards is nothing new, as Tesla has been using them as a backup key of sorts for years, but in the case of this patent, Ford is aiming to make those items a bit more useful. Rather than just being used to access a vehicle or start it, these cards would utilize a built-in display to show all kinds of things – including what vehicle they belong to, a vehicle’s status, maintenance reminders, lock status, and even whether a rental vehicle is active or not.

The card would receive this information via a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, which is already quite common – some airlines even use these types of devices to track luggage, in fact. It’s an interesting idea for sure, and one that may wind up becoming the default, go-to key option for Blue Oval models in the future.
