The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed a large number of interior-related patents in recent months as it aims to reinvent that particular space, introducing ideas for an enhanced in-cabin sleep experience system, a transformable rear seat, a seat-mounted work surface, swiveling seats, and new kinds of seating solutions, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing a similar idea for a configurable interior that could wind up being used in future Ford vehicles, too.

Much like people like to redecorate their homes from time to time, Ford imagines a future when we can do the same thing to our vehicle interiors – albeit with even more ease. In this case, that process would be incredibly easy thanks to a modular system complete with floor-mounted tracks fitted with rails, ductwork, and upper/lower regions that would allow users to move seats and other elements around in all different types of configurations.

This means that users could move seats around and even deploy desks to transform their vehicles into a mobile office, bedroom, or living space of sorts, but also ensures that the electronics and other features contained within those seats would continue to function. This is critically important in a time when many new vehicles have heated and cooled seats, along with power and massaging features in some cases.

Given how dedicated Ford remains to making vehicle interiors more of a living space than just a place to sit while driving around, the ideas presented within this patent seem quite likely to make it to real world applications, which could be a boon to those that have a need to work on the go – or even catch a nap or eat a meal in random places, too.

Transferable or moveable interior space in a Ford is a genius idea! I am 72, hope I live long enough to buy that vehicle!
