In van-hungry Europe, that type of utilitarian hauler is the vehicle of choice for many, which is reflected on the sales charts. In that regard, The Blue Oval continues to dominate the competition as the Ford Transit was Europe’s best-selling van in 2022, while in the UK specifically, the Transit Custom was that country’s best-selling vehicle – in general – in both 2021 and 2022. Now, with the all-new, next-generation Transit Custom going on sale in Europe nearly one month ago, Fleet News has ranked Ford as the most reliable van manufacturer in the UK as part of its annual FN50 reliability index.
This is notable given the fact that Ford took this particular crown from last year’s winner – Mercedes-Benz – which also happens to be one of its biggest rivals in the van market. FoMoCo hasn’t topped the rankings since 2016, but has experienced more of a gradual rise after moving up to third place last year, but the launch of the dedicated Ford Pro commercial business and a lineup revamp has helped it rise to the top once again.
Fleet News credits much of this improvement to Ford Pro’s suite of connected vehicle services and uptime management tools that predict when issues might occur, enabling fleets to make repairs before something breaks. In terms of individual models, the Ford Transit moved up from seventh place last year to third-place this year – behind the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Volkswagen Transporter – while the Transit Connect finished seventh and the Transit Custom came in ninth place.
To come up with these rankings, Fleet News polls leasing companies to determine how many issues they experienced with their vans over the past 12 months, after which those numbers are used to rank each model and manufacturer. Given the fact that Ford remains the best-selling van maker in Europe, it makes this top ranking even more impressive.
