It’s important to note that the Expedition was vastly outsold by two GM models spanning four nameplates. GM’s competitors in the segment are the Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban, as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Meanwhile, Ford treats the Expedition as one model, though the nameplate technically comprises two separate models: the “regular” Expedition and the extended-length Expedition Max. The “regular” Expedition directly rivals the Tahoe and Yukon, while the extended-length Expedition Max goes up against the Suburban and Yukon XL.

Treating the Tahoe and Suburban as a single vehicle (the way Ford treats the Expedition and Expedition Max) gives Chevrolet 39,661 combined deliveries, outselling the combined results of the Expedition and Expedition Max by 22,600 units (see running Chevy Tahoe sales and Chevy Suburban sales).

Meanwhile, treating the Yukon and Yukon XL as a single vehicle (again, mirroring the way Ford treats the Expedition and Expedition Max) gives GMC 21,158 combined deliveries (see running GMC Yukon sales and GMC Yukon XL sales). This combination still outsells the Expedition by 4,097 units.

The Jeep Wagoneer saw its sales contract 44 percent last quarter, selling 7,248 units, while the Nissan Armada sold 4,532 units, up 11 percent. Finally, the Toyota Sequoia sold 3,768 units, increasing by 17,843 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.

In terms of segment share, the Tahoe maintained 30 percent share, while Ford Expedition sales commanded 18 percent share, down one percentage point. The Suburban sought 13 percent share, losing one percentage point, while the Yukon also held 13 percent share, holding steady year-over-year. The Yukon XL earned 10 percent share, up one percentage point, while the Wagoneer lost five percentage points for eight percent share. The Armada earned five percent share, up one percentage point, and finally, the Sequoia gathered four percent share, up four percentage points.

Overall, the mainstream full-size SUV segment contracted seven percent, meaning Ford Expedition sales performed right on par with the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford Expedition sales slipped during Q3 2023. Its nine percent slide can be attributed to ongoing supply chain issues, which have continuously made production of the full-size SUV difficult for FoMoCo. Even so, it experienced an upswing during August, during which over 9,500 units rolled off the assembly line at the Kentucky Truck plant, although UAW strikes negatively affected Expedition production not long after. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Ford Expedition sales slip in the months ahead as a result of decreased supply at the dealer level.

Even so, Ford is offering a not-insignificant $2,500 incentive toward the purchase of the 2023 Expedition with the goal of stimulating interest in the full-size SUV.

Looking ahead, the 2024 Ford Expedition gains a new exterior color dubbed Wild Green as a no-cost option, along with the new Excursion Package, which adds floor liners, the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package and the Advanced Cargo Manager with black roof rail crossbars, along with suspension/drivetrain upgrades such as ControlTrac with eLSD, a 3.73-geared electronic limited-slip differential, and the Continuous Controlled Damping (CCD) system with suspension road preview.
