The Ford Authority Take

For some time, the once-Ford-owned micromobility company Spin was enjoying a rapid expansion across the globe, but regardless, the automaker had long been contemplating spinning off that entity as it didn’t really make sense under the automaker’s current corporate umbrella. Back in March 2022, it did precisely that, and Spin merged with Tier – Europe’s leading shared micromobility provider – though The Blue Oval retained a stake in the company and has since filed a patent for an accessible scooter. Now, this newly filed Ford patent outlines an idea for an electric scooter integration module, too.

With electric scooters becoming more and more popular – particularly in dense urban areas – Ford notes that it can be challenging to manage an entire fleet of escooters and keep them charged and present in high-demand areas. As such, this patent explores ways to integrate smartphones and swappable batteries into scooters, using a battery expansion cradle attached to the handlebars to facilitate part of this process.

Additionally, the scooters outlined in this patent would have a removable battery module with a built-in smartphone holder, which would even position that unit so that its camera can be used to record the action. It’s a dual purpose system of sorts, and one that could very well make its way to future escooters – particularly given their incredible rise in popularity over the past several years – making it easier to keep those units running even when the battery is depleted.
