Over the past two years, Ford has ranked below the mass market segment average in the J.D. Power Mexico Dependability Study in what one would call disappointing performances. However, the brand experienced a tremendous turnaround over the past year, it seems, as Ford wound up ranking first among all mass market brands in the 2023 version of this very same study, which was just released.
This time around, Ford managed to best the competition with a score of 137 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), which was lower than all of its rivals. It’s quite the massive reversal compared to last year, when Ford finished with a score of 251 PP100, which ranked it near the bottom, along with below the segment average of 233 at that time.
The J.D. Power Mexico Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by the original owners of vehicles in Mexico following 12-36 months of ownership. This year, the study was redesigned to more accurately capture 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories – exterior; driving experience; features/controls/displays (FCD); driving assistance; infotainment; seats; climate; interior; and powertrain. Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Overall, this year’s study found that dependability in that particular market improved, with the mass market average coming in at 216.
“Millennials and Gen Z owners have grown up in the digital age and their expectations are higher when it comes to infotainment operating correctly,” said Gerardo Gomez, senior director and country manager at J.D. Power de Mexico. “This is a critical opportunity for automakers to make progress in this area and improve the overall owner experience, as these two generations will make up a greater share of vehicle buyers in the future.”
