The Ford Authority Take
Ford van sales during Q3 2023 were carried by the full-size Transit van, which crushed the competition in its segment last quarter. In order to keep pace with demand, FoMoCo added a third shift at Kansas City Assembly plant, and it seems to be working, considering the notable increase in sales last quarter. Additionally, interest is likely furthered by the Transit Trail variant that joined the lineup for the 2023 model year, an upfit-ready vehicle built with the the outdoor and van life enthusiast in mind.
It’s also worth noting that Ford has excluded the full-size Transit from discounts thus far this year. Since the van continuously proves to be extremely popular, dealers don’t have any problem selling the vehicle, thereby discouraging The Blue Oval from incentivizing customers to purchase it.
On the other end of the spectrum, sales of the Transit Connect continued their steady decline. This isn’t a shocker, especially considering that the Transit Connect will be discontinued after the 2023 model year. It’s one of the last offerings still standing in the compact van segment, as its current, singular rival, the Ram ProMaster City, has also been killed off, meaning the segment will no longer have any competitors once supply of the ProMaster City and Transit Connect is depleted at the dealer level. As such, Transit Connect sales will only continue to slide until there are no more units left to sell.
In turn, that means that the full-size Transit will be the last gasoline-powered Blue Oval van standing in the near future, and will be solely responsible for Ford van sales once supply of the Transit Connect runs out.
