Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a special battery saver mode that could be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on May 23rd, 2022, published on November 23rd, 2023, and assigned serial number 0373317.

In recent months, Ford has filed several patents aimed at improving the process of charging EVs, including ideas for a hands-free charging system, an EV charging pad with wireless charging, and a portable vehicle charging system. At the same time, a phenomenon called “vampire drain” – or when EV batteries tend to lose charge while sitting around not being driven – has also historically been a bit of a problem, though not necessarily with Blue Oval EVs, but it’s something that this newly filed patent aims to rectify, regardless.
The concept behind this patent is rather simple – it outlines an idea for a battery saver mode that an EV would enter automatically when it’s parked for an extended period of time, which is already the case with some Ford ICE models. However, EVs have certain features that also place a load on the vehicle’s battery and cause it to lose charge while sitting around, which is particularly concerning since those vehicles also rely on that battery pack to drive.
As such, Ford suggests utilizing multiple modes including a full power mode when the vehicle is being used, as well as a batter save mode when the flow of power from the battery pack to various accessories is completely cut off. It’s a pretty basic idea in general, but one that could play a big role in helping to make future Ford EVs more efficient when sitting for longer periods of time, unplugged from any sort of power source.
