Ben Rhodes, driver of the No. 99 NASCAR Ford F-150, captured his second Truck Series championship by finishing fifth at Phoenix Raceway on November 3rd, 2023, surviving over 20 laps run in four attempts at Overtime.
Rhodes didn’t have it easy. In fact, as the laps ticked down, instead of watching his windshield to track down the drivers ahead of him for the race win, he found his eyes locked on the rearview as the No. 23 Chevy Silverado RST of Grant Enfinger made a last-ditch attempt to pass him for the championship. However, Rhodes held him off, even after light contact with the No. 98 NASCAR Ford of Zane Smith for the lead, which appeared to damage the No. 99 F-150.
“I can’t even believe it,” Rhodes said after the race. “It’s just so awesome, man. To go 25 laps into overtime, do you know what that feels like? It’s crazy. I didn’t think we were going to make it. I thought we were going to pop a tire, that anything that could have gone wrong was going to go wrong.”
He added, “Grant [Enfinger] almost got me. But hats off to him, he ran a great race. I wouldn’t want to race against anybody else for the championship. He raced me clean and I respect the heck out of him for it.”
The No. 19 Silverado of Christian Eckes won the race, though he was not eligible for championship contention.
Rhodes’ championship win marks a clean sweep for The Blue Oval across all three divisions, as Ryan Blaney secured the Cup Series championship, and Cole Custer took the Xfinity Series in Ford Mustang race cars.
