1992 Ford Thunderbird Is A Rare Find These Days: Video

Lots of interesting Ford vehicles end up in the hands of David Long, also known as the Car Wizard, and he takes the time to show off the more fascinating examples, like a 300,000-mile Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, a 1967 Lincoln Continental. He recently shared that his mechanic, Grimes, picked up a 1992 Ford Thunderbird that’s in remarkably great shape considering its age, as the coupes are getting hard to find in any decent shape almost thirty years after that generation went out of production.

What really sets this Thunderbird apart from the pack is the fact that it’s a factory supercharged Super Coupe. Long’s mechanic explains that he picked it up in California from its previous owner and road tripped back home, and that it’s the fifth Thunderbird he has owned. With 62,000 miles on the odometer, he just couldn’t pass it up.

The exterior shows little damage, and since it was kept in a dry climate, it’s virtually rust-free. Inside, it’s pristine, although its seat do show its age in the worn leather seats. Everything inside is black, and its dash is in excellent condition, free of age-typical cracks and bubbling.

Under the hood, it’s a little dusty but looks great otherwise. The engine is topped with an ETON M90 supercharger, and the powerhouse hasn’t needed much modification or work outside of regular maintenance. That engine was rated at 215 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. And that peak torque is reached at the low end of the tachometer – 2500 RPMs to be exact – and Long’s mechanic says he has plans to overdrive it a little bit more, coaxing even more power out of it with modifications.

Other things that make this 1992 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe special are the ground effects, its 16-inch chrome wheels, which are rare, and, as previously mentioned, the supercharged engine. It did have an electronically adjustable suspension at one point, but since parts are difficult to acquire, it’s been deleted. Sadly, it doesn’t ride nearly as good as it used to with the suspension intact. Even so, it still runs and drives beautifully, and is an excellent example of the oft overlooked Thunderbird coupe.
