A few weeks ago, Tyler Hoover of the YouTube channel Hoovie’s Garage purchased a 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor with 300k miles on the clock, expecting to find a number of issues, as one would expect from pretty much any vehicle with that kind of mileage total. However, Hoover was pleasantly surprised to learn that this wasn’t the case at all, and the high-mileage pickup was actually in pretty fantastic condition – save for a few minor things – as his preferred mechanic, David Long, who is otherwise known as the Car Wizard, discovered. Now, after Long recently took a deep dive into topics such as the excellence of the Ford Panther platform, problems securing parts for vintage Lincoln Continental models, and the importance of finding the right mechanic, he’s back with a new video on Hoover’s Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.
In Hoovie’s prior video, Long discovered that the F-150 SVT Raptor had an exhaust leak, an oil leak, worn inner tie rods, a loose u-joint, and a non-working e-brake, all of which he estimated will cost around $2,000 to fix. In this video, he takes a bit of a deeper dive into those problems, but most specifically, the exhaust leak that’s plaguing the off-road-focused pickup.
As Long points out, this particular exhaust leak was quite difficult to find, and at first, simply sounded like a ticking noise. Upon further inspection, he and his crew discovered that the upper rear bolt on the exhaust manifold had broken clean off, though it’s in a pretty difficult spot in terms of access – not to mention the fact that with 300k miles on the clock, pretty much every bolt on the truck is hard to remove.
In this case, Long has to remove the motor mounts and partially raise the engine to remove the exhaust manifolds, which obviously isn’t ideal. Regardless, this Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is in nice enough condition that it’s worth doing the work, even if it is a bit more involved than the average vehicle.
