Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a multi-plane augmented reality image generating system that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on May 4th, 2022, published on November 9th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0360331.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of patents that utilize augmented reality – an interactive experience that combines the real world and computer-generated content – over the past several months, including filings for an augmented reality system for parking, an augmented reality system with sharing capability, an augmented reality system that combats sun glare, and an augmented reality display for locating vehicles. Now, this newly filed Ford patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a multi-plane augmented reality image generating system that could be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
Modern day vehicles utilize all sorts of displays that aim to relay important information, whether that be speed, fuel levels, audio and climate controls, or even heads-up displays that that enable the driver to see this information without taking their eyes off the road. However, this Ford patent aims to take the idea of a heads-up display (or HUD) to the next level by using augmented reality to include sub-images that are overlayed with the objects surrounding the vehicle.
The uses for such a system are quite vast, and include everything from helping drivers spot deer or other animals, people, other vehicles, and pretty much anything else that might be in a vehicle’s path that may not be clearly visible to the driver. This could help prevent accidents or damage to a vehicle, and given the growing presence of HUD systems in newer vehicles, seems like the logical next step in that process.
