Former Ford Plant Sold To Brazilian State Of Bahia

Much has changed since Ford announced that it would be ceasing its manufacturing operations in Brazil back in January 2021, a somewhat jarring move following a century of presence in the South American country. Ford continues to rapidly expand its lineup in Brazil with the addition of multiple new products that have since boosted sales significantly, but it has also been seeking a buyer for its now-shuttered production facilities there, too. That includes the Camaçari Ford plant in Bahia, which was seemingly set to be sold to Chinese EV automaker BYD as recently as just a few months ago. However, The Blue Oval has now announced that this particular Ford plant will instead be sold to the state of Bahia.

“Ford informs that on Tuesday, December 5th, the reversal of the ownership of the Camaçari factory, in Bahia, was successfully completed, which means that from now on the property fully belongs to the Government of the State of Bahia,” the automaker said in a statement released today. “Ford praises the partnership with the State in this process, which was conducted with the objective of enabling economic and social growth for the Bahian community.”

This is a stunning reversal from just a few months ago, when BYD was reportedly “wrapping up negotiations” with Ford to buy the Bahia plant. The Chinese automaker was planning on transforming the plant into a major EV hub with operations beginning as soon as the end of this year, all while serving as its largest EV operation outside of Asia.

However, shortly after that report surfaced, Ford Authority reported that the automaker had reached a transfer agreement with the Bahia government that would give it ownership of the facility, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that BYD is giving up on the site. Rather, negotiations will continue between the Bahia government and BYD following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s recent trip to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping and lobby BYD Chief Executive Officer Wang Chuan-Fu, after which Jinping signed a pledge to invest $10 billion in South America over the coming years.
