Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a frunk with a moveable platform that could be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on August 22nd, 2022, published on December 7th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0391271.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of patents related to possible uses of frunks (or front-mounted trunks) in its future EVs recently, including one for a frunk-mounted projection screen, a climate-controlled frunk, a frunk with a built-in shade and more headroom, and a frunk with built-in work and entertainment-related features. Now, we have yet another, similar patent, this time outlining an idea for a frunk with a moveable platform that could be used in future Ford EVs, too.
In recent years, a number of aftermarket companies have come up with drawer systems that can be installed in pickup beds, providing slide-out storage for all sorts of things. Now, this new Ford patent aims to extend that same kind of idea to an EV’s front trunk, or frunk, which could be rolled out when access to items inside is desired, then retracted into a stored position so that the hood can be closed.
This rather large storage box could hold all kinds of things such as tools and other gear, but it also features a solid, lifting top that doubles as a work surface, making it even more potentially useful for a variety of purposes – whether that be for work or play. Even better, it may not even take away any frunk space – depending on its final design – making this a pretty viable idea that may very well wind up being used in future Ford EVs.
