The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed a number of patents related to possible uses of frunks (or front-mounted trunks) in its future EVs recently, including one for a frunk-mounted projection screen, a climate-controlled frunk, a frunk with a built-in shade and more headroom, a frunk with built-in work and entertainment-related features, and a frunk with a moveable platform. Now, we have yet another, similar patent, this time outlining an idea for a frunk with wireless charging capability that could be used in future Ford EVs, too.

While one might assume that this patent applies to something like charging a smartphone or other devices, that actually isn’t necessarily the case. Rather, it’s far more capable in that regard, as Ford notes that this wireless charging pad of sorts would be able to charge all sorts of electronic devices, although those devices would have to be capable of accepting a charge wirelessly, of course.

Regardless, the benefits of such a system are quite obvious – when using the frunk at a job site or for other purposes, such as tailgating, one could set their devices directly on the flat portion that tilts down and acts as a table. That way, devices could be charged while one is working or hanging out, eliminating the need to place the device near a charging port or use a cable of any kind – and that type of convenience may make it viable for use in future Ford EVs.
