Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a multifunctional cargo cover that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on June 13th, 2022, published on December 14th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0398940.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed patents for a cargo area tool carrier system, as well as a liftgate-mounted privacy panel. While a bit different in scope and purpose, these patent filings do indicate that Ford is busy trying to come up with ways to make the rear cargo area of its future vehicles slightly more useful and versatile, and that concept continues with this new patent filing outlining an idea for a multifunctional cargo cover that could be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
While most crossovers and SUVs come with some sort of cargo cover these days – some of which can be folded or retract into a housing for easier storage – the cover outlined in this patent is a bit different in that it can be positioned or stored in many different ways. This includes not only a traditional flat surface to conceal cargo from prying eyes, but also folded up into a partial covering or even transformed into a giant tote bag of sorts.
As one might imagine, this opens up a new world of possibilities when it comes to ways we could potentially use cargo covers in future Ford vehicles. The idea of a cover doubling as a large tote bag, for example, would make the act of transporting things like groceries or other items much easier, making this a potentially very useful idea – if it indeed comes to fruition.
