The NASCAR Cup Series has attracted a handful of drivers from Australia’s V8 Supercars over the past season. After winning at the Chicago street course, Shane van Gisbergen recently announced that he signed on with a full-time Xfinity Series team for 2024, and 2023 Supercars champ Brodie Kostecki is set to try his hand at a few Cup Series races next year. Now, Supercars veteran Cam Waters will join them behind the wheel of a NASCAR Ford Mustang, according to a report from Speedcafe.
Waters is expected to compete in three Cup Series races and will team up with NASCAR Ford team, Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing (RFK), to get the job done. Before this year’s Supercars race at Bathurst, Waters visited the U.S. to talk with RFK about taking on American stock car racing in 2024. Waters’ current sponsor in Supercars, Monster Energy, is expected to back him in the Cup Series.
Currently, RFK fields two full-time entries in the Cup Series: the No. 6 Mustang of part-owner Brad Keselowski and the No. 17 Mustang of Chris Buescher. Waters will take on a third part-time entry fielded by RFK in select events next year, although it’s not clear what number will be on his doors, and his schedule has not yet been confirmed.
Waters has been adamant in the past about his desires to compete in more U.S. races, taking on “classic” tracks like Daytona. For now, though, he will continue with his current Ford-backed Supercars team, Tickford Racing, where he hopes to find success, assuming The Blue Oval finds its footing in the midst of ongoing parity issues in the sport. In fact, Ford has threatened to pull out of the series completely if a solution isn’t reached, potentially opening the door for Waters to make the leap to full-time NASCAR competition in the future.
