Ford Explorer Among Most Popular Used Vehicles Of 2023

Typically, top-selling vehicles on the new market tend to also do quite well on the used market as well, with some exceptions, of course. This is certainly true of the Ford F-150, which was the most popular used vehicle in America in 2021 and 2022, a distinction that it also repeated in 2023, according to new data from iSeeCars. This should come as no surprise given the fact that the F-150 has long remained atop the new vehicle sales charts in the U.S., but it isn’t along in that regard, either, as the Ford Explorer also ranked among the most popular used vehicles of 2023, too.

Last year, the Ford Explorer accounted for 1.5 percent of all one- to five-year-old used vehicle sales in the U.S., which is exactly the same percentage as last year. That was good enough to rank the Ford Explorer ninth among all used models that meet that criteria, behind only the Ford F-150 (3.3 percent), Chevy Silverado 1500 (2.6 percent), Chevy Equinox (2.1 percent), Ram 1500 (2.1 percent), Toyota Camry (1.8 percent), Honda Civic (1.7 percent), Toyota RAV4 (1.7 percent), and tie it with the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Rogue, and Honda CR-V.

To come up with this data, iSeeCars analyzed over 9.2 million used car sales from the last five model years (2018 – 2022). Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within each metro area and state.

“Trucks have been so dominant in the U.S. market for so long that it’s strange to see the Ram lose its top-three ranking, even to an SUV as popular as the Chevrolet Equinox,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “This shift reflects the jump in gas prices during 2023, which led many consumers to move away from large trucks and SUVs and into smaller, more fuel-efficient models.”
