Given the fact that the Ford F-150 – along with its Ford F-Series counterpart, the Ford Super Duty – have combined to outsell every other pickup and vehicle, period, in the U.S. for more than four decades now, with millions of each populating our roads, it should come as no surprise that this popularity has long carried over to the used vehicle market as well. There, the Ford F-150 has long been one of the more sought-after models for those seeking something with some miles on the clock. In fact, the Ford F-150 was the most popular used vehicle in America in 2021 and 2022, a distinction that it also repeated in 2023, according to new data from iSeeCars.
Last year, the Ford F-150 accounted for 3.3 percent of all one- to five-year used vehicle sales in the U.S., which is exactly the same percentage as last year. That was enough to keep the F-150 ahead of its chief rival, the Chevy Silverado 1500, which finished the year at 2.6 percent, while the Ram 1500 slipped from third place last year to fourth this year at 2.1 percent, giving up its spot to the Chevy Equinox.
To come up with this data, iSeeCars analyzed over 9.2 million used car sales from the last five model years (2018 – 2022). Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within each metro area and state.
“Trucks have been so dominant in the U.S. market for so long that it’s strange to see the Ram lose its top-three ranking, even to an SUV as popular as the Chevrolet Equinox,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “This shift reflects the jump in gas prices during 2023, which led many consumers to move away from large trucks and SUVs and into smaller, more fuel-efficient models.”
