Tesla has long topped the U.S. new vehicle sales charts – at least as it pertains to the best-selling all-electric models – after getting a bit of a jump start compared to traditional legacy automakers like Ford. That’s part of the reason why The Blue Oval and much of its competition has signed a deal with Tesla granting owners access to that company’s expansive Supercharger network, in fact. However, in the EV-friendly confines of Norway, Tesla also finished out 2023 as the best-selling automaker of any kind, an honor it has now secured for three straight years, according to Reuters.
While the Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover, Ford E-Transit, and Ford F-150 Lightning are all sold in Norway currently, it was Tesla that managed to sell the most vehicles in a country where nearly five out of every six new vehicles purchased last year were all-electric models of some sort – 82.4 percent, a figure that rose from 79.3 percent in 2022.
In Norway, Tesla’s own market share grew from 12.2 percent in 2022 to 20 percent in 2023, according to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV). That particular country is aiming to become the first in the world to ban the sale of ICE vehicles – which it aims to do by 2025 – and it doesn’t levy the same taxes on EVs that it does on gas-powered models, which undoubtedly helped it reach those aforementioned figures.
Additionally, the Tesla Model Y finished 2023 as Norway’s best-selling vehicle, beating out the Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. In terms of overall automakers, it was followed by Toyota, which enjoyed a 12.4 percent share of the market last year (up from 8.0 percent in 2022), as well as Volkswagen, which saw its market share shrink year-over-year from 11.6 percent to 10.8 percent.
