Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a movable console with an airbag that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on August 22nd, 2022, published on January 30th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11884229.

Ford has filed a rather large number of airbag-relates patents in recent months, a list that includes a seatback-mounted overhead airbag, a movable roof supported airbag system, a movable floor supported airbag, and a center console airbag system, along with a movable center console with hidden storage space. Now, those ideas come together somewhat for yet another, similar patent – this filing for a movable console with an airbag that could be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
As is the case with those aforementioned filings, this new patent is exploring yet another place where Ford may install airbags in its future models, all in the name of providing better protection for occupants in the event of a crash. Oftentimes, the center console contains some sort of dead space, which prompted the automaker to explore ways to incorporate one or more airbags in it, which could certainly help prevent injuries when accidents occur.
As is the case with most modern airbags, this system would be able to detect the presence of an occupant in the seat of a vehicle, as well as a potential impact before it occurs. If that’s the case, the system would move the console and then deploy the console-mounted airbag(s) in front of and around those occupants somewhat, providing an extra layer of safety in the process.
