Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a UV light-based sanitation system that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on June 27th, 2022, published on December 28th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0414820.
The Ford Authority Take
After launching a heated sanitation solution for the Ford Police Interceptor Utility back in 2021 as a way to battle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Blue Oval has filed a handful of patents that aim to take similar action against all kinds of germs and viruses in the future. Those filings include a seat assembly with a liquid sanitizer system, an unmanned aerial vehicle sanitation system, and a liquid sanitation system with a UV light cleaner, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed Ford patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a UV light-based sanitation system that could be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The purpose of this patent filing is – as one would assume – to provide a sanitization apparatus inside of a vehicle that would also utilize an ultraviolet light to sanitize objects, rather than the entire cabin of that vehicle. One could simply place an item like a smartphone into the apparatus, at which point the light would sanitize it and eliminate any germs in the process.
This slot would exist within the center console of a vehicle, and as Ford points out in the patent, could be used for more than just our personal vehicles. Rather, the automaker also imagines ride share vehicles utilizing such a feature so that they could help prevent the spread of germs somewhat – making it quite viable for use in future Ford vehicles.
