Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for automatic tinting windows that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on March 31st, 2017, published on January 23rd, 2024, and assigned serial number 11878575.
The Ford Authority Take
As a handful of new vehicles begin to incorporate things like panoramic sunroofs that can automatically darken or lighten on command, Ford has also been busy filing patents related to this same topic. That list includes – most recently – ideas for window-based privacy panels, a sun tracking and protection system, and a vehicular switchable glass system, to name just a few. Now, we have yet another one to add to that quickly-growing list – this recently filed patent outlining an idea for automatic tinting windows that could be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
As Ford points out in this new patent filing, modern vehicles are capable of doing many things automatically, whether that be providing personalized experiences or even driving themselves. As such, it makes sense to think that the next logical feature we may one day be taking advantage of are automatic tinting windows, too.
In this case, Ford’s proposed system for accomplishing that task would rely on the location and orientation of a vehicle to determine the direction and intensity of sunlight outside the vehicle, after which the system could respond by tinting not only an entire piece of glass, but also, a small section or multiple sections of that glass if needed. It’s a fascinating idea for certain, and one that may help make our morning or evening drives a bit more pleasant.
