Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a vehicle body mounted side view mirror assembly with off-roading and security features that could be used in future vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 20th, 2021, published on January 16th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11872940.
The Ford Authority Take
As automotive theft continues to become a bigger and bigger problem, Ford has taken several steps to try and mitigate it. That includes launching a new camera-based vehicle security company called Canopy with ADT, adding a remote monitoring system and stolen vehicle services to the Ford F-150 following the latter’s launch in Europe, and filing patents for some substantial stolen vehicle technology upgrades, a vehicle-to-vehicle security system, and a neighboring vehicle security system. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a vehicle body mounted side view mirror assembly with off-roading and security features that could be used in future vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, too.
The idea behind this particular filing is that side mirrors create a bit of a problem when the doors are taken off of some types of off-road-focused vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator. Ford got around this issue by mounting the side mirrors on the Bronco in a manner that they stay with the vehicle even with the doors off, but they may one day be used for more than just checking out what’s lurking behind a vehicle.
This patent lists several features that could one day be present in our side mirrors, including the ability for that piece to pivot and telescope, wear a wind wing, and incorporate everything from extra lighting to a snorkel and mounts for accessories. Perhaps more notable, Ford also mentions that it could add radar sensors or other security measures to the side view mirrors as well, which could very one day become a reality, given its other, related moves in recent years.
