The concept of rebodied modern cars that feature classic styling is nothing terribly new, as we’ve seen a handful of such creations over the years – a list that includes a 1996 Ford Thunderbird with ’50s bodywork, a similarly-modified 1996 T-Bird, and a 1988 Mercury Sable with 1950 Ford exterior parts fitted to it, too. Now, that somewhat unusual list of builds has expanded to include another strange yet intriguing one – this 1987 Ford Mustang, which features bodywork from a 1952 Henry J Corsair and is currently up for grabs at Bring a Trailer.
Between 2012 and 2014, the seller of this wild 1987 Ford Mustang worked on transforming it visually by replacing the Fox Body’s body panels with those from a 1952 Henry J Corsair, which was not an easy process, as one might imagine. That job involved not only cutting up the original Corsair to remove its panels, but also, modifying the Mustang’s unibody chassis before all of those parts could be trimmed to fit and subsequently welded on.
Regardless, the end result is quite well done, we must say, and aside from its SN97 Ford Mustang wheels, one would be hard-pressed to tell that this isn’t some classic from the ’50s – at least until they peek inside. There, the interior has been completely retained, from its cloth buckets to dashboard and steering wheel, though an aftermarket stereo system was added for good measure.
Power -as one might imagine – comes from the donor pony car’s original 5.0L V8, which in this case has been modified with the addition of a Spectre intake pipe, shorty headers, and a dual exhaust system. It sends its power to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission and an 8.8-inch rear end with a limited-slip differential and 2.73:1 gears. It’s truly hard to guess what this Frankenstein-like creation might ultimately sell for, but if nothing else, we can pretty much guarantee that the new owner will have something no one else on earth does.
