2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Beats Hummer EV In New Comparison

Several Blue Oval products have fared quite well in recent comparison tests conducted by MotorTrend, with the Ford F-150 Tremor beating out the Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss and Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, the Ford Mustang proving superior over the BMW M2, while the regular S650 pony car also managed to take down the Dodge Challenger, to boot. As for the Ford F-150 Raptor R, it has already dazzled pretty much everyone who’s driven it, as well as defeated the Ram TRX and GMC Hummer EV pickup in multiple comparison tests. Now, MotorTrend has gotten its hands on a 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R and a GMC Hummer EV to see how these two very different pickups fare against each other, too.

Aside from the fact that the Ford F-150 Raptor R and GMC Hummer EV are both pickups with a bed, they couldn’t be much more different otherwise. The Raptor R generates 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque from its gas-chugging supercharged 5.2L V8 Predator, while the Hummer EV uses three electric motors to churn out a total of 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. Then there’s the matter of weight – the Blue Oval pickup tips the scales at 6,077 pounds, while the EV model weighs a truly scale-busting 9,016 pounds.

In the case of these two specific trucks, the price-as-tested is pretty close, however – $112,395 for the F-150 Raptor R, compared to $117,435 for the Hummer EV 3X. Put the hammer to the floor, and both accelerate like sports cars, with the Hummer beating the Raptor R with a 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds versus 3.9, while both prove cushy on the road yet also exhibit hilarious amounts of body roll in corners, as one would expect from heavy trucks with off-road intentions – an area the Raptor R proves superior, as one would imagine.

Ultimately, the Ford F-150 Raptor R wins this comparison for a number of reasons, as MT notes in its conclusion. “The Hummer is the better value of the two, although that might not be the right word for a $117,435 truck. With air springs, four-wheel steering, Super Cruise, a removable roof, and an 800-volt battery pack capable of wicked-quick charging, it’s a technological tour de force that does a much better job justifying its price tag.”

“And yet as absurd as a $112,395 F-150 is, we can’t help but be charmed by the Raptor R. You could make all kinds of arguments for why this truck is worth that much money. For us, it’s enough that the Ford puts a stupid grin on your face anywhere you drive it – and you can drive it anywhere. When we make it back to the moon, we should build the buggy from a Raptor R.”
