Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Ford Edge sales rocketed a healthy 98 percent during Q4 2023, moving 35,397 units to place fourth among a whopping 23 entries in the ever-growing and crowded midsize and full-size mainstream crossover segment.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee led this space with a 22 percent bump to 61,723 units. The Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales), one of two entries from The Blue Oval, saw sales dip five percent to 48,667 units while still placing second. The Hyundai Santa Fe followed in third with a six percent uptick to 35,412 units. Meanwhile, the Ford Edge (see running Ford Edge sales), The Blue Oval’s second entry, placed fourth with a 98 percent leap to 35,397 units. The Toyota Highlander, one of three entries from Toyota, took fifth with a 46 percent drop to 31,365 units, though that’s due to the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander peeling off sales. See more on that below.

The Hyundai Palisade placed sixth with a 61 percent jump to 30,652 units. The Volkswagen Atlas followed close behind in seventh with 30,139 deliveries, with sales up a whopping 462 percent as the crossover has been refreshed for the 2024 model year. The Honda Pilot, one of two entries from Honda, placed eighth, posted a nine percent bump to 27,901 units, while the Kia Telluride, in nineth, saw sales slip three percent to 26,784 units. The Toyota Grand Highlander, the second entry from Toyota, took tenth with 23,660 deliveries. The rest of the field each moved less than 23K units.

The first-ever 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is new to this segment as a three-row crossover SUV that slots in above the “regular” two-row Toyota Highlander to serve as a direct rival to the Ford Explorer. While sales have already been impressive for this newcomer, the three-row model is really just taking sales from its two-row “sibling,” though the two are mechanically very different and share only a name in common.

Notably, GM did not break the top ten in spite of fielding three entries. The Chevrolet Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales) placed 11th with a 17 percent drop to 22,556 units, Chevy Blazer (see running Chevy Blazer sales) sales were flat for 16,653 deliveries to place 13th, and the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales) saw sales fall 23 percent to 10,774 units for 18th place. All told, GM accounted for a total of 49,983 deliveries.

Comparatively, sales of Ford’s Edge and Explorer combined for 84,064 deliveries, moving over 34K more units than its crosstown rival.

In terms of segment share, the Cherokee led with a 12 percent share, up one percentage point year-over-year. When the segment leader accounts for just over a tenth of all sales, and is the only model here posting a double-digit segment share, it’s a telling sign of just how crowded this space has become with so many entries vying for a slice of the pie and eight of the 11 automakers represented here fielding multiple models.

The Explorer earned a nine percent segment share, down two percentage points, followed by the Santa Fe maintaining a seven percent share and the Edge also posting a seven percent share, though up three percentage points. The Highlander, Palisade, and Atlas each held a six percent share, down six and up two and five percentage points, respectively. The Pilot maintained a five percent share, while the Telluride and Grand Highlander both also all earned a five percent share, with the Telluride down one percentage point. All other entries each posted a four percent share or less.

Overall, the midsize and full-size mainstream crossover segment grew eight percent to 512,575 units during Q4 2023, meaning Ford Edge sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford Edge sales closed out the year continuing an upward trajectory from the previous quarter for a 98 percent leap, placing fourth during Q4 2023 while the Ford Explorer took second for a solid showing of 84,064 combined deliveries for The Blue Oval. Apparently FoMoCo has successfully navigated challenging supply chain issues that have made production difficult over the last few years, with plenty of inventory on tap to post impressive sales in a very crowded segment that keeps gaining new entries.

Yet, the Edge in its current form is on its way out. Production of the Edge, along with its corporate cousin, the Lincoln Nautilus, is set to end in late April at the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada. However, as previously reported by Ford Authority, the Edge will likely be replaced with an EV in the future, although the timetable for such a change has not yet been revealed.

As a reminder, the 2024 Ford Edge was completely unchanged for its final year as it gets sent out to pasture, though the future of the nameplate remains unknown.

  • All percent change figures compared to Ford Edge sales in Q4 2022, unless noted otherwise
  • In the United States, there were 78 selling days for Q4 2023 and 78 selling days for Q4 2022

Maybe they will reconsider after the elections if oil drilling returns then ICE will be more favorable. Electrics are not feasible yet in most areas. My 22 Edge ST only has 8000 miles and I don’t need three row seating
