The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed quite a few patents exploring ways to make the front trunks – or frunks, as they’re otherwise known – more useful in the future. That includes ideas for frunk-based wireless charging, shades to filter out the sun, a projection screen, a frunk with built-in work and entertainment-related features, a climate controlled frunk, a frunk with a moveable platform, and a frunk with various work surfaces. Now, this new patent filing keeps that trend going by presenting us with a concept for configurable frunks that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.

Though they aren’t present in every EV sold today, the frunk has thus far proven to be a great asset for owners of all-electric Blue Oval models, as they not only add considerable storage space to those vehicles, but they also contain power plugs and other useful features, too. As such, Ford is keen to innovate and find new ways to use this additional space, with this concept applying to two different deployed positions.

Those positions are intermediate and fully deployed, with upper and lower sections that move independently of each other. This way, those two sections could be used for different purposes – for example, the lower section may have a separate lid that can close, providing more of a hidden storage space on which other items could be loaded. It’s a very simple idea, but one that may appeal to those looking to separate cargo in their future Ford EVs, and as such, it could wind up making it to an actual production vehicle at some point.
