The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, FoMoCo has filed patents for ideas such as a cargo bed module receiving system, a deployable cargo panel, an extendable cargo bed side wall, and an accessory attachment system – all of which aim to make future Ford pickups more capable and flexible in regards to their cargo carrying capability. Now, this newly filed patent for an adjustable base plate system keeps that trend going, albeit in a slightly different direction.

If this new patent comes to fruition, future Ford pickup owners may one day have an adjustable base plate system in the bed of their vehicles that consists of multiple tracks, one of which is designed to extend outward. This way, one could store cargo in the bed of their pickup and then easily retrieve it, without having to climb up in the bed to do so.

This adjustable base plate system would also contain unique indentations designed to hold things like tools or smaller items that may otherwise roll around in the bed, but users would still be able to stick sheets of plywood or larger items back there and take advantage of its sliding capability. It’s an interesting idea for certain, and one that would most definitely be useful for pickup owners, who already have a number of aftermarket bed storage solutions available to them. If this patent comes to fruition, however, they may be able to one day spec such a system straight from the factory, too.
