Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an extendable cargo bed floor that may be used in future Ford pickups, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 17th, 2022, published on February 20th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11904951.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed quite a few patents exploring ways to improve the cargo-carrying capacity of its vehicles as of late, a list that includes a multi-panel bed, an adjustable base plate system, an extendable cargo bed side wall, a cargo bed ramp system, and special access openings, to name just a few. Now, that trend continues with this new patent filing, which outlines an idea for an extendable cargo bed floor that may be used in future Ford pickups, too.
The concept here is, as one might imagine, quite simple – Ford is aiming to add an extendable bed floor to its future pickups, one that could make it far easier to load and unload heavy or awkward items from the bed, as well as serve a number of other purposes as well. This could also include more than one section capable of sliding independent of the other(s), too.
In the patent drawings, we can see these extendable floor sections being used for all kinds of purposes, ranging from using it as a portable table with which one could operate a saw on and cut wood to storing heavy items – even if they’re only on one side of the bed. Given the presence of a new, multi-function tailgate on the refreshed 2024 F-150, this also opens up a new world of possibilities in that regard.
This kind of idea could prove incredibly useful for owners of future Ford pickups, and as such, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this extendable cargo bed floor come to fruition – particularly since it presumably wouldn’t be difficult or expensive to develop, either.
