Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an air sanitizing apparatus that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on May 20th, 2021, published on February 13th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11897318.
The Ford Authority Take
After launching a heated sanitation solution in the Police Interceptor Utility in the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic a few years ago, Ford has proceeded to file quite a few patents for similar ideas – a list that includes a seat assembly with a liquid sanitizer system, an unmanned aerial vehicle sanitation system, a seat assembly with a liquid sanitizer system, and a UV light-based sanitation system. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for an air sanitizing apparatus that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept of this particular system is the same as the aforementioned ideas – to eliminate germs and prevent the spread of illness. However, in this particular case, Ford aims to accomplish that goal by using an apparatus with a motor and rotating element mounted inside of a vehicle that utilizes an apparatus with a negative ion generator, ozone generator, and an ultraviolet radiation source to kill germs.
When needed, this system would automatically sanitize the inside of a vehicle when it detects that no one is present inside the cabin and the windows are up and the doors are locked. After it’s finished, the system would lower the windows to air out the cabin, too. As Ford points out in the patent, this idea could be used not only in regular passenger vehicles, but also commercial models like buses – which tend to accumulate their fair share of germs.
