After investing heavily in upstart EV automaker Rivian years ago, Ford has since sold off most of its stake in that company as the two companies have become more rivals than partners. Meanwhile, Rivian has also been looking to expand its reach after terminating an exclusive contract with Amazon, which will allow it to sell its EV vans to other commercial customers. However, we’ve known for some time that Rivian is also working on a smaller, cheaper model compared to its somewhat pricey R1T pickup and R1S SUV, a crossover that aims to compete with the Ford Mustang Mach-E in a strategy that somewhat mimics what The Blue Oval is doing. Now, that model – the Rivian R2 – has been teased for the first time.
The Rivian R2 is set to be fully revealed on March 7th, but in the meantime, we’re getting a bit of a sneak peek via the video below, which plays into the company’s position as a company that sells vehicles to those who seek adventure. This will apparently trickle down to the Rivian R2, which has long been rumored to be a smaller, far more affordable alternative to the R1T and R1S.
As is typical, this teaser doesn’t show us much of the new Rivian R2, but we do get confirmation that its front end design is basically identical to that of the R1T and R1S, with a light bar spanning the width of the front end and a pair of oval-shaped lighting elements positioned at both ends.
Though Rivian hasn’t revealed any additional details about the R2, prior rumors suggest that it will start out at around $40,000, and that it will be a smaller crossover. Otherwise it’s unclear what sort of powertrains will be offered, nor what kind of range it might offer customers, but we won’t have to wait much longer to discover those details, at least.
We’ll have more on the Rivian R2 soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Rivian news and ongoing Ford news coverage.

Rivian, the car with the front end only a mother could love.
I’m surprised Rivian hasn’t filed C11 yet.
