MotorWeek‘s Retro Review series continues to provide us with a treasure chest of throwback clips from Blue Oval history, a list that most recently includes both the large but long-gone 2000 Ford Excursion and the sharp-handling but also-discontinued 2001 Ford Focus. Now, we’ve been blessed with yet another cool Retro Review, this time, one covering a model that’s still around – the Ford Mustang – but in this case, MotorWeek wound up taking a look at a pair of very special variants from the 2001 model year, specifically.
The 2001 Ford Mustang had a little bit of something to offer for everyone that appreciates good old-fashioned American pony cars, including, of course, the beloved SVT Cobra. For 2001, the Mustang Cobra got a bit of a power boost for its 4.6L V8, taking it up to a still-solid 320 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque – 60 horsepower and 15 more pound-feet than the standard Mustang GT that year, which was mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
That was good enough to take the Cobra from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and down the quarter-mile 13.7 clicks, but it wasn’t the only cool variant one could opt for in 2001. Rather, the Ford Mustang Bullitt had made a comeback at that point, helping to celebrate the iconic movie car piloted by legendary actor Steven McQueen.
Along with its cool looks, the 2001 Mustang Bullitt got a bit more power than the standard GT, too – 265 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, once again mated to a five-speed manual, which was good for a 0-60 romp of 5.7 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 14.1 seconds. Interestingly, MotorWeek noted that the Bullitt felt more refined than the Cobra, but in reality, either of these cars proved quite popular in their heyday.
