Long considered to be the cream of the pony car crop, it’s no surprise that we routinely see some interesting examples of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 surface for sale at various collector car auctions, such as the typical low-mile models and even the occasional prototype. Now, those in the market for a rather special example of the S197 version of this model are in for a bit of a treat, as this very cool 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR glass roof model is slated to hit the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach auction next month.
This 2008 Ford Mustang GT500KR bears the iconic “King of the Road” moniker – making it one of just 1,011 built in that particular model year – as well as of just 328 produced in 2008 sporting Ebony Black paint with Satin Ebony racing stripes. However, it’s also the only glass roof model built as well, one with its racing stripes etched into that portion of the bodywork – making it at truly special find, indeed.
The story behind this one-of-one Ford Mustang GT500KR actually began when it was sold by The Blue Oval at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, with all of the proceeds going to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF). There, Carroll Shelby himself was present on the auction block to drop the hammer, noting that “Barrett-Jackson will be a rare opportunity for one lucky bidder to own a Shelby GT500KR with a glass roof, a car no one else can even buy. It’s been too long, but I’m very excited to have the ‘King of the Road’ back.”
This same GT500KR changed hands for the second time at the 2015 Scottsdale auction as part of the Ron Pratte Collection, and since then, it’s been tucked away in climate-controlled storage. With just 80 miles showing on the clock, it’s now seeking its third owner, and we have no doubt that more than one pony car fan will be ready to bid for the chance to become precisely that.
